Presenter:

Dr. Dinkar Sitaram
Hewlett Packard, India.

Mrs. Geetha Manjunath
Hewlett Packard, India.

Mr. Marcus Wong
Wireless Advanced Research & Standards organization
Huawei North America R&D center, USA

Tutorial Abstract:
The tutorial provides a detailed overview of cloud computing models, cloud platforms, application development paradigms, concepts and technologies. It describes the basic foundations needed for developing cloud applications covering compute/storage scaling, data parallelism, virtualization, MapReduce and SaaS.  Approaches to address key challenges of a cloud infrastructure, such as scalability, availability, multi-tenancy, security and management are also addressed. The presenters  particularly examine cloud platforms that are in use today as case studies, give a flavour of programming APIs and compare the technologies that underlie them. Finally, the tutorial lays out the key open issues and emerging cloud standards that will drive the continuing evolution of cloud computing.

Technical material for this tutorial will be drawn from the presenters’ upcoming book titled “Moving to the Cloud” published by Elsevier Inc.

Cloud based computing services has seen an explosion of growth in IOT. With its attractive features and low cost factors, even traditional wireless operators are getting into the act, such as considering and deploying cloud based RAN concepts in an effort to reduce the roll-out costs of mega wireless infrastructure and maximize return of investments to support data and service growth. In addition to the SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS models offering by the traditional cloud services, another type of SaaS: Security as a Service is gaining traction to combat threats and vulnerabilities brought to the mobile networks as a result of more and more powerful mobile nodes in the form of smartphones flooding the network and making sophisticated attacks possible anytime and anywhere. We will explore Security as a Service in the cloud and how it can bring value to the market place and to the operators.

Keywords:
Cloud Computing, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, MapReduce, key-value stores.

Potential Audience:
The tutorial will cater to technologists and computer scientists who are eager to learn about what’s under the hood of cloud platforms. Developers who can program traditional systems can also get started to program for the cloud.

Biographical Sketch of the Presenter:
  1. Dr. Dinkar Sitaram is a Chief Technologist at HP Systems Technology and Software Division, Bangalore, focusing on driving the adoption of cloud and self-healing technologies.  He is one of the key individuals responsible for driving file systems and storage strategy, including cloud storage. Dr. Sitaram is also responsible for University Relations, and Innovation activities at HP.

Dr. Sitaram received his Ph. D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B. Tech from IIT Kharagpur. He joined as a research staff member in IBM's Research Division at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Subsequently, he returned to India as Director of the Technology Group at Novell Corp. Bangalore. Before joining HP, Dr. Sitaram was CTO at Andiamo Systems India (a storage networking startup), responsible for architecture and technical direction of an advanced storage management solution. He also authored the book "Multimedia Servers" published by Morgan Kaufman, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of High-Speed Networking. His R&D efforts have resulted in over a dozen granted US patents.

  2. Mrs. Geetha Manjunath is a Senior Research Scientist and Master Technologist at Hewlett Packard Research Labs in India. She has been with HP since 1997 working on  research issues in the area of Embedded Systems, Java Virtual Machine,  Mobility, Grid Computing, Storage Virtualization and Semantic Web. She is currently leading a research project on cloud services for simplifying web access for emerging markets.

Before joining HP, she was a senior technical member at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bangalore for 7 years - where she lead a research team to develop parallel compilers for distributed memory machines. She is a gold medalist from Indian Institute of Science where she did her Masters in Computer Science in 1991 and is currently pursuing PhD. She was awarded the TR Shammanna Best Student award from Bangalore University in the Bachelors degree for topping across all branches of Engineering. She holds four US patents with many publications. SiteOnMobile, a cloud-based solution driven by her was awarded the NASCOM Innovation Award 2009 and  was also the winner of Technology Review India's 2010 Grand Challenges for Technologists (2010 TRGC) in the healthcare category

  3. Mr. Marcus Wong is in the Wireless Advanced Research & Standards organization of the Huawei North America R&D center. He joined Huawei in 2007 and has been focusing on various aspects of research and standardization in 3GPP and WiMAX Forum security areas. Marcus is also active in the Wireless World Research Forum, contributing to various projects within WWRF.

Before joining Huawei, Marcus had spent more than 15 years in the telecommunication industry with both Bell Laboratories and Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology, covering and contributing to many aspects of security in wireless communication systems, including 2G/3G/4G wireless networks, Personal Area Networks,  and satellite communication systems.

He is currently servicing as Vice-chairman of 3GPP Security Group SA3 and bas been the Cice-chairman of Wireless World Research Forum Security and Trust Group WG7. In addition, he also holds Certification for Information System Security Professional (CISSP) from the prestigious International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium.
