General Chair's Welcome It's my pleasure to welcome you to 5th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunication Systems (IEEE ANTS) 2011 in Bangalore, India. It is the only IEEE conference fully sponsored by ComSoc that is held every year in India.

ANTS is a unique conference in many ways: It has a very good mix of tutorials, industry sessions, panels, invited talks, and technical papers, both from the academic and industrial community. Every effort has been made to create a program that has a significant component of industry and business to encourage dialogue with the research community. The topics in this conference cover all aspects of networking, with papers or presentations on the latest happenings in those fields. The program features a large number of invited luminaries and prominent speakers from around the world.

The conference of this magnitude is not feasible without the outstanding contributions from many individuals, in particular all those in the organizing committee, the steering committee, and the Technical Programme Committee. The General Chair is indebted to many volunteers who made this event possible. I hesitate to name them as I am afraid I might leave some of them out. Nevertheless, I do want to acknowledge the following Organizing Committee members for their time and tireless efforts to make this conference a huge success: Technical Program Chairs Professor Byrav Ramamurthy and Professor Vijay Sivaraman, Industry Chairs Dr. Deepak Kataria and Dr. Srinidhi Saragur, Publications Chair Professor Srinivasan Ramasubramanian, Panels Chair Dr. Shiv Kalyanaraman, Website Chairs Professor Vinod Vokkarane and Mr. Sachin Shetty, Tutorials Chairs Dr. S.K. Sinha and Dr. Amitabh Saxena, Local Arrangements Chair Mr. R. Pavanesh, Publicity Chairs Dr. Ming Xia, Mr. Saigopal Thota, Dr. Ntsibane Ntlatlapa and Dr. Ashish Pandharipande. I also want to thank Professors Biswanath Mukherjee, Rudra Dutta and Krishna Sivalingam for guiding through the complexities of organizing a conference like ANTS. Finally, I want to thank all the tutorial instructors, keynote speakers, invited speakers, the panelists and the organizers and moderators of the panels for accepting our invitations and agreeing to share their experiences, ideas and visions of the future that is evolving so rapidly.

Last but not the least, we are grateful to our sponsors for the financial support provided by many organizations, namely Hewlett-Packard, LSI, Adobe, WWRF, NICTA, Alcatel-Lucent, Netgear, Huawei, Avaya, and IP Junction.

Welcome to Bangalore, India, and we hope you will enjoy the conference while renewing old friendships and building new ones with your fellow colleagues! We look forward to your feedback on the conference.

Welcome to Bangalore, the silicon valley of India, for the 5th IEEE ANTS 2011 conference. Once again, this year's ANTS includes a high-quality technical program combined with strong industry participation. We received 98 long paper submissions and 19 short paper submissions from over 10 countries. Each paper was reviewed by at least 2 (and often 3 or even 4) members of the technical program committee, and we accepted 34 long papers and 9 short papers for oral presentation, along with 9 papers for poster presentation. The acceptance rate for long papers was below 35%. The high-quality technical program reflects the growing importance of this conference to academic and industry researchers in India and worldwide. The program also features two invited papers and an invited talk from renowned researchers in Canada, Australia and the USA, and several keynote talks from influential executives from industry. To accommodate the growing number of high-quality papers being presented at ANTS, we have now organized the technical presentations in two parallel tracks, one covering wireless networking, and the other broadly covering wireline networks and applications. The papers are arranged in 12 sessions across three days. We also very proud to host a poster session and three exciting panel sessions on topics that are highly relevant to the current networking industry.

We would like to thank all of our 40 TPC members, who come from 12 countries, for their hard work and dedication in freely volunteering their time to review the paper submissions. We would also like to thank everyone in the organizing committee, particularly the general chair Dr. Sudhir Dixit, for the time and effort they have put in to ensure a high-quality program. Lastly, we would also like to thank you, the authors and attendees of IEEE ANTS 2011, for your support and participation. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy the IEEE ANTS 2011 conference experience.

It gives us immense pleasure to welcome you to Bangalore to attend the 5th IEEE ANTS 2011 conference from December 18 - December 21, 2011.

Some of world's leading experts are congregating to participate in the Industry Program spread over three days and which includes keynotes, panel sessions and power breakfast events.

We have keynote speakers from HP, LSI, Adobe, ALU, NICTA, Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF), Netgear, Huawei, and Avaya representing a wide spectrum of industry and providing their unique perspectives on a variety of topics consistent with the emerging trends in networking where the end user demands and cloud computing based service paradigms are influencing evolving network architectures, system designs and service delivery models.

We have organized three panel sessions, one on each day. The first panel is on energy efficiency and green networking and brings together leading experts from academia and industry to deliberate this important topic. The second panel discusses opportunities for growth in telecom sector in India with the rollout of BWA and LTE and brings together the who's who from the operator and vendor community in India. The topic for the third panel is on fostering an innovation economy in India and for the first time brings all the leading IT and engineering outsourcing vendors in India on a single platform to discuss issues, challenges and make recommendations. We hope you will leverage the open Q&A format of these sessions to get the most out of these panels.

We have two Power Breakfast events on Day 2 and Day 3 of the conference. These events are open to all registered attendees. The theme of the first Power Breakfast is on mobile VAS opportunities in small towns and rural communities in India and has representation from the major worldwide OEMs. The theme of the second Power Breakfast is on Network Virtualization and has representation from major ICT vendors.

We have attempted to intersperse the Industry Program with the Technical Program in our humble effort to foster an industry-academia dialogue where industry is benefited by exposure to leading-edge research in networking as well as has the opportunity to communicate to academic researchers which practical problems require further research.

We would like to thank the speakers and panelists of the Industry Program for taking time from their busy schedules to join us at this conference and making this event a success. We would also like to thank everyone in the organizing committee, particularly the General Chair Dr. Sudhir Dixit, for being ever so gracious with his time and guidance at every stage of the program development but for whose help we could not have ensured a high-quality Industry Program. Last but not the least, we would also like to thank you, the attendees of IEEE ANTS 2011, for your support and participation. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy the IEEE ANTS 2011 conference experience.
